Inter-unit Fitness Competition 2007
A challenge of one’s fitness, a challenge of one’s endurance, these, are the main motives of the Inter-unit competition 2007 proudly organized by Bukit Panjang Government High School’s NPCC cadets on 13th April, Friday. The fitness competition consists of the 4 stations, inclined pull-ups or push-ups for boys, sit-ups, standing board jump and 4x10m shuttle run. The best two teams for the male and female category would be awarded trophies. It is the test for the ability of the cadets in terms of fitness and willpower as unlike the NAPFA held annually in schools, the competition’s results would be based on the most number of pull-ups, sit-ups etc. one can do.
Unfortunately, it was already raining when we were preparing for the event. Everything had to be shifted to the canteen instead of outdoor. Nevertheless, we kept our cool and continued with the guidance of our CIs and NCOs. Schools started streaming in at 2.30pm and ushers could be seen walking around, making sure that the cadets from other schools know where to go.
Soon, after a short briefing by the MC and our TO, the event started. Everyone was so engrossed in doing their best, giving their best shot for the event, aiming for the top, the best. It was a sentimental sight as the look of determination on all competitors face greatly shows how serious they are in being the champions. Nevertheless, everyone was cheering for the competitors whether they are just supporters or competitors. Cheering for them, encouraging them and believing in them, these were what really made the event meaningful. It is not only about winning; it is the spirit, the mentality of the cadets that really determine the ultimate winner in the end.
There was a break for the cadets after the event while the sirs and ma’ams were counting the score. The cadets could get a free drink at the drink store to hydrate themselves, at the same
time ‘explore’ or walk around the school during the break. The prize presentation followed shortly after that and the 1st runner-up for girls is River Valley High School and the champion for girls is Zhenghua Secondary School. The 1st runner-up for boys is Jurong Secondary School and the Champion is clinched by Zhenghua Secondary School again.
The whole event was really a valuable experience for the cadets in charge as this was their first time organising an event for units from other school. After preparing for it and going through the whole procedure again and again for the past few days, the event was successfully carried out. Although everything could be done better in other areas, it was a job well done, seeing that it was our first time. I think that is what NPCC is all about. It is not only about drills, campcraft and more drills, the learning procedure and the way all cadets work together makes the squad more bonded together, understand more about each other and most of all, the cheering and encouraging our fellow cadets regardless of what happened. The opportunity for cadets to plan events and carry them out, this is what NPCC hopes to gain. Cadets are trained to be future leaders and planners, to be independent and cooperative. Most importantly, is letting the cadets know the importance of teamwork and communication with their group members.
However, without the CIs, HOs and TOs to help us and guide us along, it would have been an extremely difficult task. Therefore, we would like to thank them for making the event a successful one but even so, everything ended well and experiences, lessons were obtained and learnt throughout the whole event.
